Think Long
05/20/2008 Speaker Book of The Bible Sermon Series AudioI wonder how many of us had made New Years resolutions this past year. I would venture to guess that not many of them have been upheld. We like to make promises don’t we, fully intentioned to keep them. When there is something we really want or things look so bad we swear an oath. I toyed waith playing a mothers day video last week that showed this little boy begging his mom for a puppy; how he swore he would take care of it. I did that. Ask my mom if I fulfilled my end of the bargain and she will say no, emphatically. For 14 years that stupid dog lived, and I think everyday my mom uttered under her breath, “Oh, I’ll take care of it mom! Oh, I’ll feed it mom! Oh, I will scoop the poop up mom!” as she did all those things herself. I may have done them the first few days, or even weeks, “Look mom, I’m taking care of him just like I promised!” And she would say ‘yeah’ with the wisdom of a mother, knowing it would be short lived. The idea of having a dog was so important to me that I was willing to swear up and down that I would take care of it. I didn’t. Was I lying? No. Did I have integrity? No. Was I being impetuous and impatient, yes!
